Jobs Available in B.C? You Got One. Now What?
2008-10-16 14:21:49

Congratulations. You just scored a plum part-time job that's going to juice up your resume and give you just enough extra cash for...well, whatever you need a little extra cash for.

It's your first paid gig, so you are tres excited, but you are also thinking, "...Now what?" You're not too sure what to expect and you're ever so slightly nervous about the end result of your job search: a job.

Well, it just so happens that you have come to the right place. Let us fill you in on a few things to expect. Below is Job Magnet's list of do's and don'ts for your first few shifts.

You will probably have an orientation (aka on the first day you'll get to tour the place to find out where the fire exit is and exactly how much free rootbeer you are allowed to consume per shift). Although you already sailed passed the first impression stage with the person who hired you, this is the first impression stage for everyone else. Take heed.

Tips for Day 1

  • DO show up on time.
  • DO follow the dress code (that'll likely mean no shredded jeans, concert tees or baggy hoodies).
  • DON'T 'play it cool'. This is neither the time nor the place to be aloof or to pretend that the rules don't apply to you. They do.

Tips for Training Day

After orientation you'll most likely do a training shift with someone senior in the company. This is your queue to watch, listen, learn and ask questions.

  • DO introduce yourself right away to whoever is training you. Be proactive. Don't wait for someone else to make an intro.

  • DO ask questions (lots if you want to) but watch for appropriate times that won't disrupt customers or slow things down too much.

  • DO thank the trainer after you are finished your shift. Even training someone as fabulous as you can be tough. For the trainer, it's like working double-duty and so you should definitely say 'thanks.'

  • DON'T be afraid to tell people that you are new or that you are 'still training.' It doesn't sound stupid. In fact, it's smart.

Life on the Job

Last but not least we thought we would help you fill in the definition gaps between your social life and work life.

Social Life: DO put a venti latte in your travel mug, sit back with a few friends and discuss the Canucks, last night's episode of Gossip Girl or the state of global warming.

Work Life: DON'T put a venti latte in your travel mug and hit your shift yakking endlessly about the Canucks, last night's episode of Gossip Girl or the state of global warming. Yes, of course work is a great place to meet people and make fast friends. But when you are on shift you should be doing far more working than gabbing and socializing. It is called 'work' for a reason. Save the big chitter chatter for break-time and apres sign-out.
