Jobs Available in B.C.: Students, Need Extra Cash This Fall?

Job Magnet, Vancouver, B.C. Just because you're back in school doesn't mean you want to give up the luxury of extra cash in your pocket. After all you have a life to live. That tricked out computer and the fees for your school's medieval club don't come free. So, you might be realizing that a job during school season is just the thing, and you're wondering how to find cool jobs available in B.C.

First let's start here. A school-season gig has different requirements than your summer post. It's going to be crucial that you carefully think through what will fit well with student life, giving you the cash you need but not consuming all your free-time or completely stressing you out.

Here are a few things to consider:

1) Tip #1: 'Part-time' is a subjective term. You just scored a job at the trendiest clothing store in town. You're psyched that they offered you part-time hours and a 25% discount. But hold on just a minute...maybe you should clarify what 'part-time' really means. Do they have a minimum number of hours you'll have to work every week to keep the job? Are they likely to spring extra shifts on you when other people can't make it, or things get busy? Don't have a Take it and See What Happens approach to your job. Asking questions about their expectations ahead of time will save you anxiety, and it will line you up with the right kind of job for school season.

2) Tip #2: Exam season will come, and with it will go your free time. You've lined you up a mint restaurant job. It's perfect for your schedule and you love the fact that you get to eat for free on work days (yeah, we get it...the 'homemade' lasagna in the cafeteria just isn't like mom's). But then someone says to you, 'Can you believe we're already booked on November 21st? The 'Old' Kids on the Block are hosting their tour dinner here! No one is getting the weekend off.' Your brain starts swimming faster than Phelps - your exams start the following Monday. Working will not be an option. Solution: discuss exam season with your boss well in advance. Ask for flexibility. As soon as you have a sense of your exam schedule, talk to your supervisor right away. A good company will respect your academic pursuits and book someone else for the Old Kids shin-dig. You didn't know them when they were 'New Kids' and you don't need to know them now.

3) Tip #3: Even extremely cool jobs are annoying to commute to. You like your exercise so you normally skip the proletariat chariot and cruise by the bus stop on your low-rider. You have the mad-dash route to school down pat - light barely travels that fast. But because you bussed to the job interview (so you'd look flawless on arrival) you're not so sure about the timing of the door-to-door commute on your bike. Think carefully before you accept that extremely desirable job downtown, or across the city. How will you feel about that commute (regardless of your mode of travel) in the dead of winter? How will you feel about it when every precious minute of your time must be devoted to cramming for exams? A lengthy commute can also cut into social time. Time out your commute ahead of time and consider how realistic it is.

4) Tip #4: Even the job search itself can be painfully time-consuming. It can cut into study time, getting reacquainted with people you didn't see much over the summer, and other vital things. That's why we invented Job Magnet - think of it as your wing-man for the job hunt. It's the fastest, easiest way on the planet to find a part-time job. It's more important that you spend your time diving into your studies, getting to know that new girl or guy in your history class, Facebooking...whatever. Let us handle the legwork of finding you a job.

Parting thought: yes, there are jobs available in B.C. and yes, it's fantastic and freeing to have cash during the school year. Just make sure you're selecting something that fits with your life as a student.
